(QNO) - Quang Nam is leading Vietnam in IUU yellow card removal. This is the assessment by Phung Duc Tien, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, at the working session with Quang Nam on June 19 after his field inspection at Tam Quang fishing port (Nui Thanh, Quang Nam).
The working session focuses on the urgent implementation of tasks and solutions to address the European Commission's (EC) warning against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
At the working session, Chief of the Quang Nam provincial Fisheries Sub-Department Vo Van Long stated that Quang Nam leaders have applied a lot of solutions in order to change fishermen’s mindset in fishing according to the IUU regulations with positive results.
Since 2023, no fishing vessels from Quang Nam violating foreign waters have been captured and penalised.
According to Phung Duc Tien, the current system of legal regulations on IUU fishing has been relatively comprehensive.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has directed Quang Nam to focus resources on dealing with fishing vessels without registration, inspection, and fishing licensing.
Regarding traceability and the issuance of seafood-source confirmation (SC) and catch certification (CC), Quang Nam has also performed relatively well. However, it is necessary for the province to make more effort to remove the yellow card under the IUU Regulation.
Phung Duc Tien believed that Quang Nam would lead the country in removing the EU IUU yellow card before the EC fifth inspection.
