(QNO) - The Dai Loc Forestry Cooperative (DLFC, Quang Nam), with support from BAF (Bamboo Agro Forestry, Norway), has replaced acacia with giant bamboo on 10 hectares. The bamboo is now growing well.
According to DLFC Director, Dang Van Cong, the cooperative chose giant bamboo to replace acacia to better local income and soil erosion control. BAF provides seedlings and technical support, and guarantees product sales. Profits will be shared as agreed.
According to Mr. Cong, the cooperative handles the legal issues of the bamboo project in which locals participate without any financial investment.
Profits will be distributed following harvest while participants will get payment for their effort.
In five years, bamboo is predicted to generate twice as much profit than acacia. The cooperative intends to grow to 70 hectares by 2025, so it is working with BAF about fire safety and advance payments.
Trine Emilia Kvale Larsen, BAF founder, announced that in 2022, BAF launched a 150,000-bamboo nursery in Tien Phuoc to help combat climate change. The bamboo has adapted well locally.
BAF intends to establish a 5-hectare nursery in Dai Loc with 250,000 bamboo seedlings to plant on 500 hectares in Dai Loc, Dong Giang, and Nam Giang. The project will expand the bamboo area to 2,000 hectares by 2027.
According to a Quang Nam agriculture official, bamboo offers great potential for livelihoods and climate adaptation, aligning with sustainable forestry goals.
The main challenge is finding markets for bamboo products. Meanwhile, BAF is planning a bamboo board factory for export to Europe. So Quang Nam will support efforts to promote production linkages with BAF projects.
