The Eastern Light Festival is a mega-festival, opening on January 18 at Vinhomes Ocean Park 2 (Van Giang, Hung Yen) and running until March 16, with 580 events, including the Ocean International Lantern Competition and UNESCO-recognised Yuyuan Lantern Festival.
It was the first international lantern competition in Vietnam. There were 16 teams from China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam. The Hoi An Craft Vietnam team won first prize with Sacred Soul of Vietnam (Hồn Thiêng Đất Việt), a 70m-long, 20m-wide piece made in two months using paper made from Cam Thanh nipa palm. Judge Chen Jia praised its unique materials.
Chen Jia praised Hoi An artisans for embedding Vietnam's rich culture and history into their lantern, using eco-friendly nipa palm husks.
The festival aimed to celebrate Eastern cultural heritage and showcase the uniqueness of Vietnamese Lunar New Year to the world.
The festival celebrates light art as a bridge between tradition and modernity, showcasing Vietnam's cultural excellence. The record of Vietnam's largest lantern belongs to the Sacred Soul of Vietnam.
