(QNO) - To protect biodiversity, ensure national security, and promote sustainable socio-economic development, it is essential to establish the Cu Lao Cham Nature Reserve in Tan Hiep Commune (Hoi An city, Quang Nam province).
Forest and marine biodiversity corridor
Cu Lao Cham is a distinct entity, encompassing the elements of nature, environment, biodiversity, and ecology such as special-use forests, coral reefs, seagrass beds, seaweed systems, rocky shore ecosystems, and rural ecology.
Cu Lao Cham features distinctive forests and seas, preserving many rare genetic resources and representing the value of biodiversity in the Central and Central Highlands.
Cu Lao Cham's rich biodiversity has led to its inclusion in several plans, including the marine protected area network, special-use forest, biodiversity conservation, and nature reserve.
Cu Lao Cham currently meets all the criteria for the establishment of a nature reserve or national park according to the biodiversity law. Cu Lao Cham is making every effort to be a provincial nature reserve by 2030 and then a national park.
The project completed and ready for operation
The project on the establishment of the Cu Lao Cham nature reserve has recently received a high assessment of scientific and practical significance.
When the Cu Lao Cham nature reserve comes into operation, it will comprehensively manage ecosystems, including coral reefs, seagrass beds, seaweed, and rocky shore ecosystems.
A key focus will be linking these ecosystems to form a biodiversity corridor that connects forests to the sea and the sea to the shore. It is feasible and appropriate to operate the Cu Lao Cham nature reserve by expanding the management of the Cu Lao Cham Marine Protected Area.
According to experts, the project needs to be finished first, and the long-term goal is biodiversity protection in the Cu Lao Cham nature reserve.
Hoi An must thoroughly evaluate the conservation status of the distinctive plant species, paying particular attention to those with rare and endangered genetic resources, and determine what factors led to their current situation. The city has to pay much more attention to environmental problems in the Cu Lao Cham Nature Reserve, especially the impacts of climate change on biodiversity.
In addition, Hoi An needs to be thoroughly prepared in terms of human and material resources to respond to potential problems related to the environment.
There should be solutions to forest fires and for conserving the rare genetic resources of endangered species, particularly the swiftlets.
