(QNO) - The 15th anniversary celebration of UNESCO's Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An World Biosphere Reserve (May 26, 2009 - May 26, 2024) took place in Tan Hiep island commune on the evening of May 23.
15 years ago, on May 26, 2009, in Jeju Island (Korea), UNESCO recognised Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An as a world biosphere reserve thanks to its unique values.
Since then, the life on the islands has completely changed thanks to tourism development.
Cu Lao Cham now becomes a jewel in environmental protection and biodiversity conservation, contributing to attracting more and more visitors.
The Cu Lao Cham Marine Protected Area and the Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An World Biosphere Reserve have conducted a mission of preservation and promotion of natural and human values in the linkage between the forest and the sea, between the island and the mainland, between the continent and the ocean, and especially between humans and nature.
The UNESCO recognition of the Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An World Biosphere Reserve has encouraged local people and authorities to join hands to protect environment and biodiversity through several programmes and campaigns, such as ‘say no to single-use plastic bags’, protecting and recovering coral reefs, and preserving endangered species.
Besides, the Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An World Biosphere Reserve has also contributed to improving local livelihoods for sustainable development.
