(QNO) - Vietnam and Laos have seen several Hoi An natives establish relationships, adapt, and develop a strong bond with the fraternal nation of Laos. They contributed to the special ties between the two countries of Laos and Vietnam.
One of the strong bonds was the marriage between Prince Souphanouvong, the first president of Laos, and a beauty queen from Trung Ky (Vietnam), Nguyen Thi Ky Nam.
In 1937, Prince Souphanouvong, the youngest son of Viceroy Bounkhoong met Nguyen Thi Ky Nam, a beautiful daughter of Nguyen Van Sung, Director of the Khanh Hoa Post Office.
Ky Nam adopted the Laotian name Viengkham. Their life and revolutionary legacy are currently preserved at the Souphanouvong Museum in Vientiane, Laos.
Since 1999, Hoi An has been introduced to several localities in Laos, including Pakse in Champasak, and Sanvanakhet.
In early September, 2024, the relationship between Hoi An and Luang Prabang (Laos) was proposed on the occasion of Vice President of the Lao National Assembly Sommad Phonsena's visit to Hoi An.
On October 17, 2024, Hoi An and Luang Prabang signed an agreement to establish an official friendly relationship. The partnership between Hoi An and Luang Prabang will strengthen cultural and tourism cooperation, enhancing the bond between the two localities and two nations.
