(QNO) - This year, residents along the Hoi An coastline no longer have to worry about losing land to fierce waves, as the shoreline has been protected by a special underwater embankment.
Hoi An beaches, once Asia's most beautiful, had faced severe annual erosion from waves. They have been protected since 2020 thanks to a nearly 2.3-kilometer submerged wave-reducing embankment from Cua Dai beach to An Bang beach.
According to locals in Thinh My (Cam An ward, Hoi An city), severe erosion had brought the sea dangerously close to their homes, making some lose almost all their land by late 2023.
The recent construction of the coastal submerged embankment has prevented further land loss due to fierce waves, bringing much-needed relief and greater peace of mind for the community.
The wave-reducing embankment has restored the coastline near Cua Dai beach, contributing to an increasing number of travellers to Hoi An.
Over the past decade, severe coastal erosion in Hoi An led to abandoned resorts and ineffective wave barriers despite significant investments.
In 2020, Quang Nam built a 220-meter submerged embankment to reduce waves, followed by a 1.5-kilometer anti-erosion project at Cua Dai Beach in 2021 and sand pumping to restore beaches.
By September 2023, a 550-meter embankment at An Bang Beach extended the wave-reducing system to 2.3 kilometres, significantly improving coastal protection.
