A 400-year journey of Hoi An - Japan cultural exchange

Translated by HO THU Aug 05, 2024 11:33

(QNO) - More than 400 years ago, Japanese merchants crossed vast oceans to go to Hoi An (Quang Nam) for trade. They were allowed to establish their own neighbourhood for residence and commerce.

These Japanese merchants played a significant role in the prosperity and bustle of Hoi An, an international trading port, fostering economic exchange and creating unique cultural tourism products for the local area.

At the seminar named Hoi An - Japan cultural exchange - a Journey of cultural connection held on the morning of August 3, Nguyen Van Lanh, Deputy Chairman of the Hoi An People’s Committee, stated that the success of 20 iterations of the Hoi An-Japan cultural exchange in Hoi An and cultural activities in Japanese cities has vividly demonstrated the determination of many generations of Hoi An and Quang Nam leaders, as well as the Embassy and Consulate General of Japan.

The Hoi An - Japan cultural exchange, with increasingly elaborate activities rich in both traditional and modern identity, has become a distinctive hallmark and a unique cultural tourism product in Hoi An.

The presence of Japanese merchants in Hoi An 400 years ago was a prerequisite for the economic and cultural exchange between Hoi An and Japan, contributing to the establishment of friendship and cooperation between the two parties in the new era.

Since the international conference on the Hoi An ancient town in 1990, many agencies, organisations, managers, researchers, and friends from Japan have gone to Hoi An to collaborate in scientific research with good results on cultural heritage preservation and promotion, environmental protection, investments in economic development, and human resource training.

In particular, in 2017, the Vietnam - Japan cultural space was inaugurated. It is also the space where a model of the Red-seal ship gifted by Nagasaki Prefecture is being displayed.

On the occasion of the inauguration of the Japanese Covered Bridge major restoration, Showa Women's University gave a model of the Japanese Covered Bridge to the Hoi An Museum. It is evidence of the deep and enduring friendship that has existed from the past to the present and will remain strong in the future.

At the opening ceremony of the 20th Hoi An - Japan cultural exchange event in 2024, Mori Takero, Consul General of Japan in Da Nang, expressed his deep gratitude to those who have contributed to the Japan - Hoi An relations so far, especially those who have made great efforts to maintain this annual event in Hoi An (Quang Nam). This is the common desire of both Japan and Hoi An to respect and preserve history.

Among the activities in the 20th Hoi An - Japan cultural exchange is the program on Hoi An - Japan cultural exchange - a Journey of cultural connection, along with the opera Princess Anio. This is an around-400-year-old love story between ARAKI Sotaro, a merchant from Nagasaki, and Ngoc Hoa, a princess of the Nguyen Dynasty.
