(QNO) - Phan Van Chanh, a one-armed carpenter in Dai Thanh commune (Dai Loc district, Quang Nam province), is making furniture of bamboo stumps, earning half a billion dongs a year.
At the age of 22, Phan Van Chanh lost his right hand while he was grinding sugar cane to make sugar. After 2 months in the hospital, he wanted to change his career to make a living.
In 2012, he suddenly found a lot of bamboo stumps that were left rotten. “Such a waste," he thought. Then Phan Van Chanh came up with the idea of turning discarded old bamboo stumps into useful furniture.
Bamboo stumps, after being digged up and peeled off the roots and nodes, have been soaked in a pool for about 3 months. Then, they are dried to prevent any attack by termites.
According to Phan Van Chanh, using bamboo stumps is more difficult than using wood because of their different shapes.
He has to choose and use them creatively, making a lot of eye-catching bamboo items, including tables, chairs, toilet tables, TV shelves, and altar cabinets.
