The "Kingdom" of po mu recognized as Vietnam heritage trees

(QNO) - A group of 725 po mu (Fokienia hodginsii), in 2 mountainous communes of Tay Giang district (Quang Nam) has been recognized as Vietnam heritage trees.

Known as a “po mu kingdom” with more than 1,200 trees, the po mu forest spreads over Axan and Tr’hy communes (Tay Giang district). Of them, 725 trees whose diameters are upwards from 1.5 meters were recognized as heritage trees by Vietnam Association for Conversation of Nature and Environment on July 19th.

These po mu trees (about from 300 to over 1000 years old) live in Zi’lieng mountain over 1,500 metres above sea level. The biggest one is nearly 3 metres in diameter, 22m high and 50m3 in volume.

The forest of po mu trees  is not only significant to ecology but also meaningful in spiritual life of minority ethnic in Tay Giang district.

For the past 3 years, because of wood poachers, local authorities have founded security guard teams with youths and elders in 2 these communes to strictly protect the “Kingdom” of po mu.

On this occasion, two da sop (Ficus trees) aged more than 700 -year -old (4m in diameter) in Arang 1 hamlet (Axan commune, Tay Giang district) are also recognized as Vietnam heritage trees.

Po mu is a genus of cupressaceae. In Vietnam, it’s known as a kind of valuable wood thanks to its specific aroma, beautiful grain as well as free from termite. It’s usually used in art works and household items.
It was listed as endangered species of Vietnam and in Vietnam Red Book in 1996.
