(QNO) - An international workshop on community roles in conservation and promotion of heritages through Hoi An ancient town and My Son Sanctuary was held in Hoi An last week by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam, UNESCO Office in Hanoi and Quang Nam province.
Present at the event were Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Trinh Thi Thuy, Head of UNESCO Office in Hanoi Michael Croft, leaders of Quang Nam, domestic and international scientists and heritage managers.
Speaking at the workshop, Vice Chairman of Quang Nam provincial People's Committee Le Van Thanh said Quang Nam is responsible for preserving cultural and natural heritages, especially Hoi An ancient town, My Son Sanctuary, Cham Islands-Hoi An biosphere reserve. Quang Nam province has cooperated with international organizations, governmental and non-governmental organizations from India, Poland, Sweden, Japan…in heritage conservation and promotion.
Partcipants at the workshop affirmed that the role of the community in heritage conservation is very important.
According to Head of UNESCO Office in Hanoi Michael Croft, although the main purpose of recognition of world cultural heritages is not to develop tourism, the title of heritage has made considerable changes in community life, especially in beautiful places like Hoi An and My Son.
At these heritage sites, the local communities are also tourist product because their daily activities contribute to adding values to the destination.
