Sustainable protection of Hoi An coastline
(QNO) - The project on erosion prevention and sustainable protection of the Hoi An coastline (Quang Nam province) is launched on March 20. It aims to protect infrastructure, support economic stability, and sustain local tourism.
Cua Dai beach, stretching 7.5km, is a key tourist attraction in Hoi An. However, severe coastal erosion caused by natural factors has threatened infrastructure, altered landscapes, and impacted tourism.
Since 2020, Quang Nam has implemented erosion control projects. The first phase, completed in 2020, built a 220m submerged breakwater. The second phase in 2022 extended it by 1,530m with a VND 300 billion investment.
In 2023, the government allocated VND 210 billion for a 550m submerged breakwater and beach restoration, set for completion in September 2024. This project includes a 550m submerged breakwater and the replenishment of a 1.45km beach area.
On August 4, 2023, Quang Nam authorities approved a large-scale, sustainable coastal protection project with a total investment of EUR 42 million (approximately VND 982 billion) funded by the French Development Agency.
The project covers 3.2km² and benefits over 1,300 households. It consists of three main components: (1) Infrastructure development, constructing a 3,393m breakwater from the ferry terminal of Cham Islands to Victoria Hotel, including a 2,090m submerged breakwater and sand nourishment to restore beaches; (2) Non-structural measures, strengthening coastal management, developing a central data hub, and improving water quality monitoring systems; (3) Project management, providing technical support and conducting physical model testing.
Scheduled for completion in 2026, the project is expected to stabilise local livelihoods, enhance economic growth, and bolster Hoi An’s resilience against climate change.
