Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An biosphere reserve: A hub for educational tourism

(QNO) - A workshop discussing the role and position of schools, communities, and stakeholders in developing community-based and educational tourism took place in Hoi An (Quang Nam province) on December 19.

The workshop was jointly organised by the Management Board of the Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An world biosphere reserve, Hoi An Women’s Union, University of Education- the University of Danang, and the Small Grants Programme (SGP) of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Vietnam.

According to Nguyen The Hung, Deputy Chairman of the Hoi An People’s Committee and Head of the Biosphere Reserve Management Board, multisectoral linkages and community cooperation have driven several local community development projects, in which community-based and educational tourism plays a particularly vital role.

At the workshop, Hoi An acknowledged significant contributions from organisations, particularly UNDP and GEF SGP, in fostering sustainable development through community livelihood and conservation projects.

Besides, students have got growing opportunities to conduct practical research in the Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An biosphere reserve.

So, the biosphere reserve should strengthen community roles and stakeholder connections to meet educational and sustainable development goals and enhance its position as a hub for community-based and educational tourism.

The workshop discussed strategies for developing community-based and educational tourism, highlighting its role in conservation, sustainability, and education.

The models of community-based and educational tourism started in Hoi An, then spread to other provinces and cities. Its focus is on collaboration to improve quality and enhance its impacts and brand name.
