Land-based crab farming
Le Ngoc Dong (from Duy Xuyen, Quang Nam province) has successfully researched and experimented with a land-based crab farming model.
Witnessing the uncertainty in traditional shrimp and crab farming in his local area, Dong researched land-based crab farming in Singapore and Thailand through the internet, then applied and adjusted the methods to be suitable for the natural conditions in Quang Nam.
This model is a system of four water-transfer ponds, including one main pond for raising juvenile crabs, one pond for treating food waste with microorganisms, one for disinfection, and one settling pond.
These ponds are connected by a water circuit and are closely monitored for the temperature, pH levels, alkalinity, and salinity. Dong's pilot project started with 50 juvenile crabs in February 2023, and so far, they have grown well.
According to Dong, this model has considerable potential in the eastern region of Quang Nam. It allows for both raising juvenile crabs and producing commercial crabs.
Dong is planning to expand this land-based crab farming model by adding more space and roofing to ensure a stable temperature between 30-32°C for optimal crab growth.
