Making hammocks on Cham Islands, a national intangible cultural heritage
(QNO) - At the opening ceremony of the Firmiana Simplex flower festival taking place on August 6, 2024, the traditional craft of making hammocks on the Cham Islands welcomed the title of National intangible cultural heritage from the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
In 2014 and 2015, the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment designated four old Firmiana Simplex trees on the Cham Islands as heritage trees, ranging in age from 100 to 250.
The Firmiana Simplex flower festival 2024 is a key cultural and tourism event in the Hoi An- Summer Emotions 2024, which runs from May to August 2024.
The event aims to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Cu Lao Cham- Hoi An Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
The festival becomes more significant when the craft of making hammocks from the bark of the Firmiana Simplex tree is recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage.
The recognition of the traditional craft of making Firmiana Simplex hammocks as a national intangible cultural heritage aims to honour the creativity of the locals in preserving and developing the craft.
This also plays a crucial role in preserving cultural identity, promoting tourism, and developing the image of the hospitality of local residents.
This is also an opportunity to promote and develop tourism, bringing the images of the Cham Islands and its unique cultural values to the world.
