President To Lam elected Party General Secretary, affirms strong fight against corruption

VOV.VN - State President To Lam was elected General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee at an extraordinary plenum of the Party Central Committee in Hanoi on August 3.

To Lam won an absolute majority of votes in favour at the plenum, heard a press briefing in Hanoi on August 3.

He will now succeed Nguyen Phu Trong who passed away in Hanoi on July 19 due to his old age and serious illness.

To Lam was elected Party General Secretary of Vietnam when the Party’s 2021-2026 tenure has 17 months to go.

“We have gone more than halfway towards achieving the objectives set in the resolution of the 13th National Party Congress. Fast and complicated developments in the world require great efforts, solidarity, cooperation and unanimity of the entire Party, army and people to successfully realize the common goal,” said the newly elected Party chief at the press briefing.

According to To Lam, priority will now be given to hammering out measures to accomplish tasks and targets set by the 13th National Party Congress on time.

He also affirmed that the Party will continue to promote the fight against corruption and negativism pioneered by late Party General Nguyen Phu Trong.

“This campaign must be carried out decisively and thoroughly to defeat the internal enemy,” stressed the Party leader.

Party General Secretary and President To Lam was born in 1957 from northern Hung Yen province. He is a professor and doctor of law.

He is a member of the Political Bureau (tenures XII and XIII), a member of the Party Central Committee (tenures XI, XII, XIII), and a deputy to the National Assembly (tenures XIV and XV).

He is also deputy head of the Central Steering Committee for Prevention and Control of Corruption and Negative Phenomena, a member of the National Defense and Security Council, and a member of the Central Steering Committee for Judicial Reform.

General Lam had held the post of Minister of Public Security since April 2016 before being elected President of Vietnam in May 2024.
