Livelihoods based on Ngoc Linh ginseng

So far, there are 728 households in Tra Linh commune involved in the cultivation of Ngoc Linh ginseng. The communities support each other in planting, protecting, and caring for ginseng.

Reportedly, Tra Linh plants about 323 thousand Ngoc Linh ginseng trees under the forest canopy each year.

Ngoc Linh ginseng has been a livelihood for local people, helping them escape poverty and become richer. So, both local authorities and residents are conscious of preserving and developing this precious medicinal herb.

Currently, Ngoc Linh ginseng is planted in 7 communes in Nam Tra My. The number of households with ginseng cultivation is increasing year after year, and the cultivation area is being expanded.

The area of Ngoc Linh ginseng is now over 1,650 hectares, up from 65 hectares in 2014. The number of households planting ginseng is more than 1,500 and 110 respectively.

Besides, there are 18 enterprises cultivating Ngoc Linh ginseng and other medicinal herbs under an over-341-ha forest canopy.

The local authorities have been planning and developing planting structures for various medicinal herbs by region, enhancing the potential available in each area and facilitating enterprises and local residents to participate in the preservation and development of medicinal herbs, especially Ngoc Linh ginseng.

The district also has guidance and professional training on the process of planting, caring for, harvesting, and preserving medicinal herbs, as well as producing medicinal products. This aims to equip participants with basic knowledge about safely and properly cultivating medicinal herbs.

Tra My cinnamon preservation and development

Tra My cinnamon is identified as a key economic tree in Bac Tra My, contributing to local socio-economic development and sustainable poverty reduction.

Bac Tra My strives to cultivate 3,000 hectares of cinnamon by 2025. The area will expand to 7,000 hectares by 2030, mainly in Tra Giac, Tra Giap, Tra Ka, and Tra Bui.

Bac Tra My district has expanded production models and linkage chains between enterprises and cinnamon planting households and cooperatives. So, an on-site system of seedling nurseries has been established, which helps save transportation costs and ensure the quality of the seedlings and planted forests.

The district is aiming to develop a large-scale, organic, and concentrated raw material area, implementing the granting of planting area codes to participate in the export market.

Bac Tra My’s goal is to develop cinnamon products sustainably. So, the district has step by step built a procedure for cinnamon cultivation, harvest, processing, and protection in order to meet local and international standards.

At the same time, the district is developing some cinnamon cultivation models following the value chain corresponding to the ecological sub-region and the local socio-economic conditions; thereby promoting and expanding these models. Bac Tra My is also boosting investment promotion and the introduction of the Tra My cinnamon potential, facilitating the export of Tra My cinnamon products.
