Quang Nam: Joining hands to preserve nature and biodiversity
(QNO) - A ceremony to celebrate the International Day of Biodiversity 2024 took place in Hoi An City, Quang Nam Province on May 22.
Mr. Le Cong Thanh, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Director General of the Vietnam Environment Administration Nguyen Van Tai, and the leaders of Quang Nam province were present at the event.
In his opening speech, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Thanh said that celebrating the International Day of Biodiversity (22 May) under the theme “Be Part of the Plan” launched by the United Nations is a chance for us to join hands to preserve nature and prevent biodiversity loss.
Currently, Quang Nam has a natural forest area of nearly 450,000ha - the second largest in Vietnam. The province is rich in natural resources and biodiversity, and is also the first locality in Vietnam to hold the national biodiversity restoration year.
At the event, Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Quang Nam Province, Bui Ngoc Anh, said Quang Nam owns several unique forests, marine ecosystems, and beautiful landscapes, bringing economic values to the province.
Quang Nam is home to different rare and endemic species, such as the Saola, tiger, elephant, grey-shanked douc langur, Truong Son muntjac, Ngoc Linh ginseng, coral, and seagrass. Quang Nam is also one of the 200 global hotspots of biodiversity.
Quang Nam province contributes to the national and global biodiversity recovery process by organizing the National Biodiversity Restoration Year - Quang Nam 2024 under the theme “Living in Harmony with Nature” from March to December 2024.
Quang Nam targets contributing to responding to the National Strategy on Biodiversity to 2030 with a vision to 2050, the United Nations Decade Ecosystem Restoration (2021 - 2030), Vietnam's commitments at the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Until now, Quang Nam has successfully organized several activities relating to biological diversity, spreading the messages and receiving the support and active companionship of individuals, units, and international organizations such as WWF (World Wide Fund For Nature), Greend Viet, Vietnam Museum of Nature.
Quang Nam will continue to research the contents of the Global Biodiversity Framework, and the National Strategy on Biodiversity to 2030, and vision to 2050.
