Eco-industrial parks in Vietnam

(QNO) - An expert group meeting on eco-industrial parks in Vietnam was jointly organized in Hoi An city (Quang Nam province) in September 29 by the Vietnam Ministry of Planning and Investment (VMPI), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and Quang Nam provincial People’s Committee. 130 international and domestic representatives including 30 scientists and experts were at the event.

According to director of the VMPI’s Economic Zone Management Department  Tran Duy Dong, exploitation and use of natural resources for industrial development is high in Vietnam, causing bad impacts on the environment. So, it is necessary for Vietnam to find out strategies for sustainable development. It is an environmentally-friendly economy, reducing greenhouse gases, responding to climate change with the priority to eco-industrial parks.

Ms Beatrice Maser, Ambassador of Switzerland in Viet Nam shared her country’s experiences with short, medium and long term plans to protect the environment, responding to climate change. Switzerland will continue to support  Vietnam to improve the environment quality.

According to Dr. Heinz Leuenberger- chief technical consultant of UNIDO project, in 2011, the European Union issued the printed materials to foster the effective management of natural resources in industrial production and environment protection.

“Implementation of Eco-Industrial Park Initiative for Sustainable Industrial Zones in Viet Nam is an important project. So, UNIDO and VMPI will effectively deploy the models of eco-industrial zone in Vietnam as soon as possible”, said Dr. Heinz Leuenberger. Reportedly, this project receives the total non-refundable aid of more than 4. 5 million USD from the Global Environment Fund  and Switzerland’s Federal Economic Department.

According to Mr Dong, Vietnam has  321 industrial parks and export processing zones now. They housed over 6,600 FDI projects and 6,200 domestically invested projects with a combined capital of over 105 billion USD and 693 trillion VND (31 billion USD).  The project is piloted in the industrial parks of Khanh Phu (Ninh Binh province), Hoa Khanh (Da Nang city), and Tra Noc 1 and 2 (Can Tho city).
