Dutch experts: building artificial islands to prevent Hoi An from coastal erosion
(QNO) - Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of Vietnam Tran Hong Ha, Chairman of the Quang Nam Provincial People’s Committee Dinh Van Thu and Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management Cornelia Van Nieuwen Huizen and Dutch experts had a survey on coastal erosion in Hoi An city, Quang Nam province on April 10.

After listening to Quang Nam’s temporary solutions to Cua Dai coastal erosion, Dutch experts proposed constructing artificial islands off the Cua Dai coast to shield it from strong waves and winds. Howerever, the construction must be based on sustainable conservation of the diverse ecosystems in the affected areas.

Minister Ha highly appreciated Dutch experts’ suggestions. He also emphasized the area of Hoi An coastal erosion is located in Cham Islands World Biosphere Reserve, Hoi An World Cultural Heritage, Cham Islands Marine Protected Area. So, the scientists and experts must be cautious about researching, experimenting and evaluating environmental impacts to find out optimal solutions to Hoi An’s coastal erosion.

Ducth Minister Cornelia Van Nieuwen Huizen said the Dutch Government paid attention to climate change that had affected Vietnam and caused coastal erosion. So, she asked Dutch experts to work with relevant ministries of Vietnam and Quang Nam to provide the best solution to the problems of An beach, one of the most beautiful ones in the world.
