Quang Nam: conservation and promotion of heritage values
(QNO) - Quang Nam has made good use of the local world cultural heritages to drive at socio-economic development.
It can be said that the development of Quang Nam tourism depends a lot on the values of the world cultural heritages here. At the same time, tourism brings in a large revenue to preserve the world cultural heritages.
Quang Nam has two world cultural heritages: Hoi An ancient town and My Son Sanctuary. They are in good condition of conservation and restoration and become charming cultural tourism products that are attractive to both domestic and foreign visitors.
In 1999, Hoi An ancient town and My Son Sanctuary were recognized as UNESCO’s world cultural heritages. The policies on heritage conservation in combination of tourism development have been approved by Quang Nam authorities since then.
Several projects on heritage restoration and infrastructure development have been invested, thanks to which a lot of ancient houses in danger of being downgraded and collapsed in Hoi An have been repaired and upgraded. The number of visitors to Hoi An has consequently increased considerably, from 160 thousands in 1999 to nearly 6 million in 2019.
It is reported that Quang Nam’s Dong Duong Buddhist monastery was recognized as a special national heritage. It is located in Binh Dinh Bac commune, Thang Binh district. Dong Duong Buddhist monastery used to be a large Buddhist center in Southeast Asia.
So, the recognition of Dong Duong Buddhist monastery as a special national heritage creates a good chance for Quang Nam to preserve and promote the values of this heritage. However, the conservation of Dong Duong heritage needs a large investment and the interest from both local and governmental authorities, national and international experts.
Quang Nam hopes that Dong Duong will be restored and become one of the attractive destinations, contributing to the local socio-economic development.
