The Quang Nam provincial project on preservation and development Ngoc Linh ginseng (Vietnamese ginseng) towards 2030 has been carried out.
Ngoc Linh ginseng is highly appreciated by local and international scientists and professional agencies not only for its economic values but also for its pharmacological properties.
The development of Ngoc Linh ginseng contributes to the local poverty alleviation and forest protection.
Ngoc Linh ginseng (globally known as Vietnamese ginseng) is one of the five most precious ginsengs in the world (i.e. the ginsengs from the US, South Korea, Canada, North Korea, and Vietnam).
The rhizome of Ngoc Linh ginseng contains 52 saponins, 26 of which are not found in other ginsengs.
In Vietnam, Ngoc Linh ginseng is found in Ngoc Linh mountainous area of Nam Tra My district (Quang Nam province), Dak Glei and Tu Mo Rong (Kon Tum province). It was recognised as a national treasure in 2017.
The Government of Vietnam then assigned the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Science and Technology to have plans to preserve and develop this type of precious ginseng.
Ngoc Linh ginseng’s economic values
All parts of Ngoc Linh ginseng are usable and bring high economic values. A kilo of Ngoc Linh ginseng root costs from several tens to hundreds of millions of Vietnamese Dongs. Its fresh leaves are sold at VND 10 million a kilo.
In Quang Nam, Ngoc Linh ginseng has recently been developed to become a key commodity crop, contributing to poverty alleviation and improving the lives of ethnic minorities in the ginseng area.
At the same time, it is essential to develop the brand of Vietnamese ginseng successfully, build production processes for Ngoc Linh ginseng products (including medicines) as national endemic products for the development of national pharmaceutical industry and socio-economy.
