United States pledges continued support for Vietnam’s climate action

VOV.VN - The United States will continue to support Vietnam in improving its capacity to respond to climate change, control pollution, sustainably manage and use natural resources in an environmentally friendly manner and at reasonable costs to minimize dependence on imported sources.

US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry spoke at a meeting with Vietnamese State President Vo Van Thuong in San Francisco on November 16 on the sidelines of the 30th APEC Leaders’ Week in the United States.

He appreciated Vietnam urgently discussing with international partners following its joining the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) to soon complete the Resource Mobilization Plan (RMP) to implement the JETP Political Declaration in the coming three to five years.

Kerry also assured Thuong that the United States is ready to deploy high-level cooperation with Vietnam to promote the agenda of the 29th UN conference on climate change (COP28) to be held in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, to achieve positive results.

The politician also pledged to continue to lend a helping hand to vulnerable communities in the Mekong Delta.

President Thuong for his part welcomed the goodwill and support of the Biden administration and special envoy Kerry personally in climate change response, affirming Vietnam wishes to cooperate with the United States in this field, in accordance with the country’s socio-economic conditions, meeting the interests of the two peoples.

He underscored the importance of the just principle in energy transition, and said Vietnam is implementing comprehensive and drastic measures to promote green growth and respond to climate change, including the adoption of the National Power Development Plan VIII for 2021-2030 with a vision to 2050, with a view to realizing the net zero emissions goal by 2050.

The President welcomed Kerry’s recommendations and hoped that the United States would continue to further facilitate the implementation of projects to support energy transition and maximize Vietnam’s renewable energy potential, contributing to ensuring long-term energy security.
