New State President elected, vows to resolutely defend national sovereignty

VOV.VN - Politburo member and permanent member of the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee Vo Van Thuong pledged to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity after he was elected at an extraordinary session of the National Assembly in Hanoi on March 2 with 97% of votes in favour.

Thuong, 53, vowed to be loyal to the Vietnamese Fatherland and people, as well as the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

“I will do his utmost to successfully fulfill the tasks assigned by the Party, State and people,” said the newly elected State President at the swearing-in ceremony.

In his address to the National Assembly session, Thuong said he deeply grasps the Party’s viewpoint of placing the people at the centre of decision making to protect their legitimate interests. He showed a strong resolve to resolutely fight against corruption and negativity, synchronously perfect the institutions for sustainable development, and build a clean and strong State apparatus for the sake of the nation and people.

The President also vowed to resolutely protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity, maintain a peaceful and stable environment for national development, and promote external relations in the spirit of Vietnam acting as a friend, a reliable partner, an active and responsible member in the international community.

The Party Central Committee at its extraordinary gathering on March 1 nominated Thuong as the presidential candidate for the National Assembly to vote at an extraordinary session on March 2.

The new elected president, hailing from Vinh Long province, southern Vietnam, is a Master of Philosophy. He had held important positions in the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and Party Committees of Ho Chi Minh City and Quang Ngai province before he was elected to the Political Bureau between 2016 and 2021, keeping posts of Secretary of the Party Central Committee and head of the Party’s Commission for Information and Education.

Between February 2021 and February 2023, he was member of the Politburo and permanent member of the Secretariat of the party Central Committee. He is also working as deputy head of the Central Steering Committee for Corruption Prevention and Control.

He has been elected to the National Assembly for the 12th, 14th and 15th tenures.
