International cooperation in conservation of Cham Islands World Biosphere Reserve

(QNO) - Cham Islands in Hoi An city, Quang Nam province was recognized as a UNESCO’s World Biosphere Reserve in 2009. Since then, this reserve has been conserved and promoted effectively by international cooperation through various projects, researches.

The conservation projects of Cham Islands World Biosphere Reserve include the community’s participation in the Cham Islands natural rehabilitation and sustainable Gecarcoidea lalandii crab havest by the Global Environment Fund (GEF), the Mangrove for the Future (MFF) programme, cooperation with the Institute of Environmental Economics at Aarhus University (Denmark), International Conservation Organization (IUCN), World Learning Inc, Virije Brussel University (Belgium) ...

According to Director of the Management Board of Cham Islands’ Marine Protected Area Tran Thi Thuy Hong, artificial coral reefs are directly grown in this area.

Since February 2017, The Green Annamite (Truong Son Xanh) project, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has been carried out in Quang Nam including Cham Islands and Thua Thien Hue provinces. It helps to support livelihood for the locals, reduce pressure on natural resources and conserve biodiversity.
