Launching communication campaign for forest protection and Saola preservation
(QNO) - The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Vietnam (WWF-Vietnam) has just launched a communication campaign for forest protection and the Saola preservation.
The campaign is a part of the project “Rescue the Saola from the Brink of Extinction” funded by the European Union.
The campaign calls for practical actions to protect the Saola, also known as the “Asian unicorn”, one of the rarest and most threatened mammals on the planet, from the brink of extinction. Forest protection is a prerequisite for preserving the Saola, protecting ecosystem and community livelihoods.
The campaign also focuses on raising public awareness to increase the ability to detect the presence of the Saola within its habitat range in the Central Truong Son region of Central Vietnam including Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue and Quang Nam.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tri Tin, WWF-Vietnam Wildlife Conservation Program Manager, said: “The Saola and other endangered species are seriously threatened by hunting. WWF-Vietnam has actively supported and implemented various activities for the Saola preservation such as building protected areas, conducting researches, monitoring and patrolling to remove traps…”
