VOV.VN - Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on October 21 received United Nations Secretary General António Guterres who is in Hanoi for a two-day visit to Vietnam.
Trong highly appreciated Guterres’ visit which he said is taking place at a time when both Vietnam and the UN are celebrating 45 years of their partnership.
He hailed the UN body’s important role in addressing global issues and promoting international cooperation for peace, stability, security, human rights and development.
Vietnam considers the United Nations an important international partner, and cooperation with the UN body is one of the priorities in its foreign policy, the Party leader affirmed.
He thanked the UN agencies for their cooperation and assistance to Vietnam over the years and expected they would pay more attention to the country’s development efforts in the time ahead.
For his part, UN Secretary General Guterres spoke highly of the achievements Vietnam has made in recent times, especially in the promotion of equality and inclusive development.
Vietnam has had many active and diverse activities, from sharing development experiences to contributing to UN peacekeeping operations, he stressed.
The Secretary-General expected Vietnam would continue to play an active role in promoting the rule of law and in realizing the common goals of the international community, including in responding to climate change.
The United Nations will continue to cooperate actively and closely with Vietnam to accomplish its goals, Guterres assured.
