(QNO) - Multi-million-dollar restoration projects at My Son have reflected India's heritage diplomacy, enhancing its cultural significance across time and space.
India’s Restoration at My Son
Under a 2014 agreement, India’s ASI restored towers A, H, and K at My Son from 2017 to 2022, helping Vietnamese experts with conservation methods and techniques.
By December 2022, the restoration of Tower Group A was completed and highly praised by both governments. India’s USD 3 million investment in My Son marks ASI’s largest project in Vietnam, strengthening future cooperation.
The 2020 restoration of Temple A' led to the discovery of a Linga Shiva in Temple A10 and a Shiva statue with a Yoni Pitha in Temple A13. Indian media praised these findings as proof of My Son’s timeless cultural value.
My Son on India's map of civilisation connection
My Son is among five key sites in India’s “Act East” heritage program, alongside Ta Prohm (Cambodia), Ananda (Myanmar), Vat Phou (Laos), and Borobudur (Indonesia), led by ASI since 2014, to preserve ancient ties shaping the modern world.
India’s engagement in Southeast Asia’s heritage restoration dates back to the 1990s. Today, its role in My Son’s restoration aligns with a broader vision of cultural reconnection, reinforcing historical links between the Ganges civilisation, Tamil and Bengal culture, and Southeast Asia.
By restoring My Son, India affirms itself as a “civilisational state” and strengthens Vietnam’s global heritage status, attracting more visitors and reviving deep-rooted historical and spiritual connections.
