(QNO) - Hoi An has followed the trend towards green tourism with local typical products for several years.
Response from travel businesses
Travel businesses were pioneers in the movement of green tourism launched in Hoi An nearly 10 years ago.
A lot of tourism and services establishments have their waste sorting and treating system, using environmental friendly items instead of plastic ones, reusing and recycling waste.
Zero-waste lifestyle has become more and more popular in Hoi An city, especially in tourism and travel-related services.
Saying no to plastic bags and single-use items has since been the green brand of Hoi An. Besides, there are some green tourism products such as waste collection tours.
Green tourism is identified to be the key for sustainable tourism development in Hoi An. It has received enthusiastic responses from local residents, businesses and visitors.
Taking action
The Quang Nam Tourism Association launched a waste management project in order to control, sort and recycle waste in 2019. The project has provided solutions to waste problems and for the development of green tourism products and services.
In September 2021, the Planning Framework for Businesses on Plastic Waste Reduction, towards Hoi An- a Green Destination (2021-2023) was implemented by Hoi An city and the Quang Nam Tourism Association.
It is aimed at getting businesses involved in plastic waste reduction and recycling for sustainable and green tourism development.
There are now different green tourism models in Hoi An and Quang Nam, such as Saying ‘no’ to plastic waste on the Cham Islands, Bay Mau nipa palm forest ecotourism village, waste collection tours on the Hoai river, tours to Tra Que vegetable village, and upstream tours on the Thu Bon river.
As green tourism is a combination of ecotourism and cultural tourism, the two world cultural heritages of Hoi An ancient town and My Son Sanctuary are significant contributors to sustainable and green tourism development in Quang Nam, making the province a friendly safe green tourist destination.
