Forest management and conservation

The Annamite Range in Quang Nam province has been threatened by deforestation, forest degradation, and climate change. At the end of 2017, the Green Annamites project started in order to identify threats and safeguard the unique forest resources in the region from poaching and habitat destruction in 4 natural reserves (including Song Thanh, Sao La, Ngoc Linh and Cham Islands). It has been carried out under the observation and participation of the locals. Moreover, the residents in the project area are supported to better their lives by planting medicinal herbs under the forest canopies.

The Green Annamites project also focused on payments for forest environmental services (PFES), the revenue from which is used to pay for forest protectors and improve the local livelihoods. In addition, the project has piloted the PFES for carbon sequestration and storage services. In 2019, nearly VND 100 billion is planned to finance Quang Nam’s communications and biodiversity conservation.

Big-tree forest planting

The Green Annamites project is planning to help plant big-tree forests reaching FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) standards. The project invests from the nursery to product consumption. A tissue culture center will be built in Dai Loc district. Some large-scale nurseries will be put in Phuoc Son, Tien Phuoc and Thang Binh districts. It is expected that 2,500 ha of big-tree forest will be planted and the area will be 4,560 ha by 2020.

According to Deputy Director of the Green Annamites project Do Dang Teo, several districts of Quang Nam province such as Dong Giang, Tay Giang, Nam Giang, Phuoc Son, Nong Son, Bac Tra My, Nam Tra My and Nui Thanh have accessed the modern methods of forest management to preserve forest biodiversity and improve the local livelihoods.
