(QNO) - The establishment of the Cu Lao Cham Nature Reserve was announced on the evening of February 21 at the Closing Ceremony of National Biodiversity Recovery Year - Quang Nam 2024.
Located in Tan Hiep, Hoi An, the 23,530-ha Cu Lao Cham Nature Reserve integrates the existing marine reserve with natural forest ecosystems on the islands for comprehensive management of forest, marine, and coastal ecosystems. Its geographical coordinates range from 15°52'30"N to 16°N and 108°24'E to 108°33'30"E.
The reserve is divided into strict protection, ecological restoration, service-administrative, and buffer zones. It comprises seven islands: Hon Lao, Hon Cu, Hon Kho, Hon La, Hon Dai, Hon Mo, and Hon Tai. Hon Lao, the largest island (1,147 ha), is home to the Tan Hiep island community.
Cu Lao Cham boasts rich biodiversity, with over 620 vascular plant species, including 365 medicinal plants and 52 rare species listed in Vietnam’s Red Book and Decree 06/2019. The reserve also features diverse marine ecosystems and a variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects.
Cu Lao Cham serves as a bridge between nature, people, and history. It plays a key role in regional development. It bears traces of ancient cultures, such as Sa Huynh, Champa, and Dai Viet. Cu Lao Cham used to be a maritime Silk Road stop from the 13th century, linking it to international trade networks
