In Vietnam, Cu Lao Cham has stood out as one of the pioneering models in plastic waste reduction.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Vu, Deputy Director of the Cu Lao Cham Marine Protected Area Management Board, in recent years, the board has cooperated with the Tan Hiep Commune People’s Committee to organize various practical activities.

These include public awareness campaigns, waste separation at source, organic waste treatment at the Material Recovery Facility (MRF), the “Ocean House” model encouraging fishermen to collect marine debris, the green business model without single-use plastics, and regular beach and coral reef cleanups.

In addition, all service businesses and households have signed commitments to reduce plastic waste and use environmentally friendly products.

Mr. Nguyen The Hung, Vice Chairman of the Hoi An City People’s Committee, stated that one of the campaign’s objectives was to reduce 70 - 80% of waste including damaged fishing gear and floating plastic debris from the sea, beaches, and seabed in tourism and fishery areas.

The Hoi An City People’s Committee expressed hope that this initiative would contribute to protecting the marine environment, reducing plastic pollution, and preserving the ecosystem and landscape of the Cu Lao Cham Marine Protected Area. It also aimed to promote Cu Lao Cham as a green and environmentally friendly tourist destination.
