(QNO) - A consultation on the role of unofficial labour forces in solid waste reduction has recently been held in Hoi An city (Quang Nam rrovince) by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Vietnam in combination with the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Reportedly, 60% of plastic waste in the world is collected by 20 million unofficial labourers, most of whom are disadvantaged.
In Vietnam, women account for 90% of the unofficial labour force. They collect over 30% of recycled plastic waste.
According to experts, it is necessary to improve the livelihood of the disadvantaged and control plastic waste through setting up the national plastic economy and implementing national plans for environmental protection.
At the consultation, the experts talked about the results the unofficial labour force gets in waste collection and recycling in Ho Chi Minh City, Danang City, and Hoi An.
At the same time, the experts suggested some solutions so that the unofficial labour force can work better and more effectively.
Earlier, the consultation delegation visited some experimental models, such as the Green House and Happy Store set up by the Hoi An waste collection groups.
Based on practical approaches, the members of the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Group under NPAP will have proper action plans for 2024.
