(QNO) - The co-management model applied in the Cham Islands Biosphere Reserve (Hoi An city, Quyang Nam province) is found very effective.
The model not only helps the locals with stable livelihood but also contributes to the natural resource management and environmental protection.
One of the co-management sub-models is protecting crabs in Cham Islands water in combination with tourism development based on the local community.
It is a cooperative whose members are crab hunters on the islands. They work together to collect and protect crabs from extinction, to build a species-specific brand with geographical indications, and to improve the locals’ income.
At the same time, the cooperative also focuses on building typical hi-quality products for sustainable tourism development.
Another co-management sub-model is carried out in Bai Huong village with a participation of 20 local residents.
They are assigned to manage and harvest seafood within an area of over 19km2.
At the same time, the members of the cooperative are also responsible for raising the community’s awareness in cultural historical value preservation and promotion, environmental protection, and tourism development.
It can be said that the co-management model in the Cham Islands Biosphere Reserve is really effective and highly appreciated. It contributes to natural resource preservation, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem protection, cultural historical value promotion, and local socioeconomic development.
