According to Chairman of Quang Nam People’s Committee Dinh Van Thu, the Chu Lai deep-water port project will cover an area of 5,186 ha. It is formed by upgrading the Ky Ha and Chu Lai wharfs. Specifically, Chu Lai port is expected to receive 30,000-DWT container vessels in full load and cargo ships of 50,000 DWT or more. The project will also be equipped with cargo harbors and wharfs for tourism. It will be linked with the system of seaports in central provinces to create a large group of ports eligible for serving international cargo shipments by 2030.

Under the plan, the volume of cargo transported through the port is estimated to be 5-5.8 million tons per year in 2020 and 11.7-12.7 million tons per year in 2030.

Reporetedly, this project is under an adjustment of general plan to build Chu Lai Open Economic Zone in Quang Nam up to 2035, with a vision toward 2035 approved by the Prime Minister of Vietnam in May.
