Recently, the islands initiated a campaign called Travellers and Fishermen Bring Waste Ashore, which aims to minimise plastic waste in the surrounding areas.

The theme of this year's World Environment Day (June 5) is Combating Plastic Pollution, reflecting the urgency of the issue. Cham Islands is at the forefront of Vietnam's efforts to reduce plastic waste and protect the environment.

Starting with the "Say No to Plastic Bags" campaign in 2009, the islands continued to evolve its plastic reduction initiatives, introducing "Say No to Plastic Straws" in 2018 and "Say No to Single-Use Plastics" in 2019.

Cham Islands, in collaboration with the local government, has conducted activities like waste sorting, organic waste processing, and campaigns to engage fishermen in ocean clean-ups. Local businesses and households also pledged to reduce plastic usage and adopt eco-friendly products.

Cham Islands still generates 3-4 tons of waste daily, overwhelming the Eo Gio landfill. To resolve this problem, Hoi An has launched a campaign to bring waste back to the shore, aiming to reduce 70-80% of waste in tourism and fishing areas.

The campaign will run from May to December 2025, with full implementation from 2026 to 2030.

It focuses on local residents, fishermen, travellers, and businesses, helping to safeguard the marine environment and promote Cham Islands as a green, eco-friendly tourism destination
