(QNO) - The conference to announce the Co-Tu script, which was funded by the Frostfondet Foundation (Norway), took place in Quang Nam province on March 19.
The conference, chaired by Quang Nam’s Deputy Chairman Tran Anh Tuan and Dr. Dang Thi Phuong, Acting Director of the Institute of Linguistics, gathered researchers on Co-Tu ethnic minorities, linguists, and officials from Quang Nam and Hue.
Tran Anh Tuan emphasised the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of the Co-Tu people, including their script, as a foundation for future educational programmes.
In 1956, Le Hong Mao (known as Conh Ta Lang among the Co-Tu people) started to develop a Co-Tu writing system. Initially, it was taught at schools in Nam Giang, Dong Giang, and Tay Giang.
By 1965, the script was systematically introduced at Apăng School (Song Kon, Dong Giang) and gained wider use, especially with the birth of the Gung Dur (Rise Up) newspaper published in the Co-Tu language.
Quang Nam has actively worked to preserve and develop the Co-Tu language. Researchers have contributed to refining the script for future implementation in schools. The Department of Education and Training plans to assess and approve its integration into the provincial education system once finalised.
