The two-story Phung Hung ancient house stands out for its unique architecture reflecting East Asian cultural essence.The house was built in 1780 with door eyes both for decoration and for spiritual protection. The name ‘Phung Hung’ means prosperity and success.The house features a frame and flooring made of ironwood and jackfruit wood, brick gable walls, and a roof covered with yin-yang tiles.Its architecture blends Japanese, Chinese, and Vietnamese influences, with Chinese-style balconies, a Japanese central roof, and traditional Vietnamese wooden frames and double-sloped roofs. The spacious living room showcases a 200-year-old furniture set.The inner chamber is accessed through a central door topped with a lacquered board and flanked by antique couplets.The house has 80 ironwood columns on stone bases and intricately carved wooden beams. A square trapdoor connects the floors for moving goods during floods.The house reflects the architecture, lifestyle, and cultural fusion in Hoi An during its thriving port era.The innermost chamber served as the family’s living space.The outer section of the second floor is the family’s worship and living space.The second-floor balcony door, in upper-bar-lower-plate style, provides both privacy and ventilation.The house is located on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street near the Japanese Covered Bridge.The eaves supports are carved with carps, symbolising prosperity, power, and luck.The house retains its architecture and interior nearly intact.The house still holds many items used by generations of the family.Phung Hung ancient house, a must-visit in Hoi An, was recognised as a national historic site in 1993.
